Paradigm develops patented coating technology

Hidden within Emery’s busy industrial landscape is a Canadian technology company quietly making a global impact.
Paradigm Shift Technologies, located on Signet Drive, has spent decades developing advanced coating solutions that are now being used by industrial and defence partners around the world. The company’s story begins in 1995 in Edmonton, Alberta, where founder and inventor Dr. Gennady Yumshtyk began developing specialized coatings designed to protect pipes used in the demanding conditions of the oil and gas sector.
These pipelines faced extreme heat, pressure, and abrasive environments. The coatings developed by the company were designed to dramatically extend their lifespan and improve reliability in situations where failure could be extremely costly.
What happened next was unexpected.
While speaking at a conference in Montreal, Dr. Yumshtyk was asked a question that would change the direction of the company: could the same coating technology be applied inside a gun barrel? Because the company had already developed techniques for coating the inside of pipes and tubes, the idea was both logical and promising.
Today, Paradigm Shift Technologies has developed patented processes that coat the inside of large barrels and other high-stress components. The technology replaces traditional chrome plating, a process long used in manufacturing but known for its environmental and health concerns. By eliminating the chemicals typically used in chrome plating, the company’s process offers a cleaner, more sustainable alternative.
According to Chief Operating Officer Eugene Yumshtyk, the benefits extend well beyond environmental improvements.
“Our coating allows a barrel to last at least twice as long as a traditional chrome-plated barrel,” he explained. “That means fewer replacements, greater accuracy, and lower long-term costs.”
Testing and evaluation of the technology has been carried out with defence organizations, including the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Navy, and Canadian military programs. As global demand for durable and environmentally responsible technologies increases, interest in the company’s work continues to grow.
Yumshtyk also noted that Emery Village has proven to be an ideal location for the company’s operations. With large equipment and artillery barrels moving in and out of the facility, transportation access is critical.
“The biggest factor for us is the location,” he said. “We’re right off the highway and close to the airport, which is extremely important when you’re moving large components. Freight trucks are coming in and out regularly, and that accessibility makes a big difference for our business.”
Ironically, while the technology was developed in Canada, much of the company’s work currently takes place with international partners. Canada does not manufacture most of its own weapons systems, meaning adoption often depends on manufacturers and defence programs overseas.
Still, the success of Paradigm Shift Technologies highlights the strength of Canadian innovation and engineering.
