Love, music and memories: Valentine’s Day at a local long-term care manor

By Sean Delaney

Valentine’s Day came early this year at a local long-term care facility, where residents, staff, and special guests gathered on February 11th for an afternoon filled with music, memories, and heartfelt community spirit.

Organized by Xania Pagliaroli, Founder of the Garland Seniors Initiative, the event centred around a lively and engaging “Name That Tune” celebration — with a romantic twist. Songs about love from the 1950s, 60s, 70s, and 80s filled the room, bringing smiles, sing-alongs, and more than a few emotional memories back to life.

Residents eagerly took part as musical hints were shared before each selection was performed. From the smooth classics of Dean Martin to the powerful vocals of Tom Jones and many others, the room quickly transformed into a joyful trip down memory lane. It was clear the music struck a chord — both figuratively and literally — with many residents singing along word for word.

Adding to the afternoon’s charm was a creative idea connecting community programs across Emery. Members of the Wednesday art class at Carmine Stefano Community Centre, under the direction of Lucy Catania, prepared small canvas paintings themed around love and Valentine’s Day. The artwork, painted by local seniors, was presented as gifts to residents and was warmly — and gratefully — received.

The paintings were vibrant, heartfelt, and personal, serving as lasting keepsakes from an event built on kindness and connection.

Support from 31 Division helped make the day extra special. Officers and staff in attendance included Staff Sergeant Alistair H. James, Gianni Filippin, Brian Moore, and Leo Addo, all of whom took time to celebrate with residents and assist with the festivities.

MPP Tom Rakocevic also dropped by to extend Valentine’s greetings and present small gifts to residents — a gesture that was very much appreciated by all in attendance.

Special recognition goes to Jennifer Delos Santos, Director of Resident Programs, whose energy, warmth, and remarkable knowledge of the music kept the afternoon moving beautifully.

Also in attendance was Sandra Farina, Executive Director of the Emery Village BIA, who assisted with gift presentations and spent time visiting with residents throughout the afternoon.

Events like this highlight the importance of bringing joy into long-term care homes — especially through music, art, and shared experiences. For many residents, afternoons like these are more than entertainment — they are meaningful moments of connection.

An afternoon of love songs, laughter, and thoughtful gestures — truly a celebration to remember.
