Spring starts indoors: Seed planting season begins

By Shannon Del Marco

While winter still has a firm grip on the weather outside, late February and early March quietly mark the start of gardening season — at least indoors.

For many green thumbs, this is the time to begin planting seeds that will later be transferred to outdoor gardens once the frost has fully passed. Starting early allows plants like tomatoes, peppers, herbs, and flowers to grow strong roots before the warmer spring temperatures arrive.

Local garden suppliers, including Berton Seeds on Weston Road, are already seeing customers return for the season. Shelves begin filling with seed packets, starter trays, soil mixes, and grow kits — all the essentials for those eager to get a head start.

For beginners, experts recommend starting simple. Herbs like basil, parsley, and chives grow well indoors with minimal space. Vegetable seedlings such as tomatoes and cucumbers can also thrive near sunny windows or under small grow lights.

As the days slowly grow longer, indoor seed planting offers a reminder that spring is on the way — and that the gardening season in Emery Village is already quietly taking root.
