March 8 marks International Women’s Day — a moment set aside around the world to recognize the achievements, contributions, and ongoing impact of women in every corner of our lives.
Here in Emery Village and the surrounding community, we don’t have to look far to see that impact in action.
From small business owners and entrepreneurs to health care workers, educators, volunteers, and community leaders, women play an essential role in shaping the character and success of our neighbourhood. Many of our local storefronts are powered by women whose dedication, long hours, and commitment to customer service keep our business community vibrant and welcoming.
International Women’s Day is also a chance to reflect on the generations who came before — women who built families, supported local causes, and helped establish the very foundations of the community we enjoy today. Their resilience and determination continue to inspire the young women now stepping forward into leadership roles of their own.
Of course, conversations sometimes arise about the need for a day specifically recognizing women. Some point out that appreciation should be universal and ongoing — and that’s a fair sentiment. Respect and recognition should never be limited to a single date on the calendar.
At the same time, International Women’s Day serves as a meaningful reminder — a pause in our busy lives — to acknowledge the progress made, the challenges that remain, and the remarkable individuals who continue to lead with strength, compassion, and vision.
Whether it’s the woman running your favourite local shop, the teacher guiding the next generation, the health professional providing care, or the volunteer giving back quietly behind the scenes — their contributions matter deeply.
As we celebrate International Women’s Day this March, we also look ahead to our upcoming March edition of the Emery Village Voice, where we will be highlighting several women in business across our community, along with profiling a number of local community champions whose work continues to make a difference close to home.
Their impact is lasting, their voices are important, and their role in shaping our future is undeniable.
